Did the title of this post sound familiar to you?
I bet it does…
I modelled it from one of the most read books in business and entrepreneurship… “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.
Although, it was published in the 1930’s, it is still popular and relevant just as if it was published recently.
Little bit about Hill…
Napoleon Hill was born in 1883 in Virginia and died in 1970 after a long and successful career as a lecturer, an author, and as a consultant to business leaders.
Think and Grow Rich is the all-time bestseller in its field, having sold 15 million copies worldwide, and sets the standard for today’s motivational thinking.
In short, his philosophy and way of thinking has inspired millions of entrepreneurs and small business owners around the world.
Here are a 3 concepts that we can learn from “Think and Grow Rich” that can have a great impact in our businesses (and frankly in our personal lives).
I won’t guarantee that your business will double overnight (hey maybe you can!) after reading this article; but what I can guarantee you is that if you make these concepts part of your daily life, you will have great positive results!
1. Desire: You Really Need to Have a Great Desire for What You Want to Accomplish
This is the first step in accomplishing whatever goals you’re committed to achieving for your business.
Now, I’m not referring to those “I wish I could do this… or that…. ” Or “I think I want to…” Or “I hope…”
You really need to have what Napoleon Hill calls “a BURNING DESIRE”…
When you have a burning desire to grow your business, you will go against all odds or challenges.
This burning desire is like an internal force or obsession that controls your actions and moves you toward the achievement of your goals.
At times, this burning desire will make you feel as if your goals were a reality.
Now, according to Napoleon Hill, there are things that you must do in order for your desires to become a reality:
- They need to be specific and clear
- Determine exactly how you’re going to accomplish it
- Establish a definite date
- Create a plan of action
- Write it down on paper
- Read it aloud daily and feel and believe yourself already accomplishing your desires (or goals)
Failure to have a burning desire for growing your business will result in not seeing what’s truly possible for your or can result quitting.
2. Specialized Knowledge: Have a Deep Understanding for What You Do
At this point, you should have a clear vision of your business goals. You know exactly what your goals are, how you going to accomplish them and by when. That is powerful!
In order to grow your business (of course I’m assuming this is your desire…), you need to have “specialized knowledge” of the services you provide or the products you sell.
If you want to dominate your market and be ahead of your competitor, you must know something that they don’t know. You can obtain this knowledge from your past experiences, training or formal education. Or you can obtain from what Hill calls your “Mastermind Group”.
Here’s is his definition:
The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.
“There is synergy of energy, commitment, and excitement that participants bring to a Mastermind Group. The beauty of Mastermind Groups is that participants raise the bar by challenging each other to create and implement goals, brainstorm ideas, and support each other with total honesty, respect and compassion.” Via Passion for Business
Additionally, having specialized knowledge will help you get more clients. You know the saying…. “People want to do business with people that know what they’re doing”.
Consider this… who gets paid more money? A general doctor or a specialist.
A specialist of course!
This also goes hand in hand with marketing… if you have a specialized knowledge in a particular niche, you will become the go to person.
“There are riches in niches” – Unknown
This will help you grow your business faster as more people are interested in your services or products.
3. Imagination & Decision Making: Believe You Can & Just Do It
Ok… here I’m combining two of Napoleon Hill’s philosophies into one. I think they go well together.
Up to this point, you’ve decided on what you desire to accomplish, you have a plan, you set a date and you acquired specialized knowledge.
Now, it’s time to imagine your outcome and make some decisions (sometimes really tough decisions).
But first, think about this for a second…
How many people have you seen that have all the skills, knowledge, connections and everything you can think of to be successful in business? Yet, they seem to not move ahead… Or become successful…
What’s stopping them?
I’m going to guess here… stay with me….
They’re lacking imagination and decision making…
Yes, they need to see themselves having those things they’re wishing for.
Then, they need to make a decision to take action and accomplishing those goals.
“Whatever the Mind Conceive and Believe, It Can Achieve” – Napoleon Hill
Most times, our lack of imagination prevent us from becoming who we really want to be.
We can’t imagine and see ourselves being a top CEO or president of a Fortune 500 company…
We can’t imagine ourselves disrupting an entire industry…
We can’t imagine creating the business that we truly desire…
We can’t imagine being the next Steve Jobs (if you’re a male anyways)…
We can’t imagine generating 10 million dollars per year…
We can’t imagine working 2 hours per day and spending more time with family…
Do you agree with me? Try it…
Imagine any of those statements and let me know how you feel… I’m willing to bet you don’t feel very comfortable or confident saying any of those statements.
That’s because our brains are trained to think small.
It’ interesting to know why we have a lack of imagination or thinking big… Is this is due to external influences from our culture? Family? Friends? Or was it anything that happened during our childhood?
We must imagine ourselves creating the business that we truly desire and decide to take action. If you’re reading this article now, although I may not know you professionally or personally, I’m willing to say that you have all the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful.
You have what it takes to be or have any of the statements mentioned above.
You have the power to decide to grow your business and do it now.
What Should I Do Now?
Are you still with me? Great! I know I get carried away with the topic of imagination.
I truly believe that it doesn’t matter what our business or personal goals are; we need to have a burning desire for our goals, be good at something, make a plan, decide on a date and imagine ourselves already accomplishing those goals.
Those are some of Napoleon Hill’s philosophies in a few sentences.
To your success!
