You need a Marketing System…
Just as if taking care of my clients on a daily basis, dealing with employees’ feelings, office daily gossip, and handling my own accounting wasn’t enough, you’re now telling me that I need a “marketing system”!
Ok…that’s what you may be going through your mind after reading this article’s headline.
And the answer to your statement is ‘Yes’! You do!
And my goal in this article is to tell you why…
Do you want to grow your business? Generate more profits?
Do you want to be able to save money for your retirement?
Or even retire early because you have a successful business that can support you and your post retirement adventures (aka. Bucket List)?
Imagine how you would feel if those things were true…. It would be great! Right?
Well, that’s what a marketing system can do for you and your business!
It can help you generate income for your business all the time, almost guarantee.
Yes, I know that sounds like a hype, but when you look at what big brands are doing and you apply what they do, you will believe what I’m saying without a doubt.
Think about big brands for moment. Let’s take McDonalds as an example. Do you think McDonalds have the best burgers or the most delicious food? I hope your answer is no. It’s been proven and tested that their food does bad to your health.
But why are they so successful and opening franchise locations all over the world?
They have one of the most effective marketing systems in the world!
They know how to market their stores, how to connect with their audiences, how to attract people to their stores and buy their food. It works all the time! That’s a marketing system that works.
Just so that we’re on the same page, let me define what a marketing system is. I’ll give you the definition from one of my favorite online marketing thought leaders, Dan Kennedy:
“Reliable, predictable, consistent system that affordably and efficiently provide abundant quantities of quality prospects and clients”
Now that you know exactly what a marketing system is, let’s go through a few elements that make up an effective marketing system.
Top 5 Elements of a Marketing System
1. A Target Market
If you ask me, this is probably the most important element of a marketing system. You really really really (not a typo) need to know who you’re selling your product or services to.
You need to select a group of people that needs and is able and willing to buy your product or service. A big mistake often made by small business owners (myself included) is that we want to build or provide a service without knowing our target market. We “assume” people will buy it or need it. That’s the wrong approach.
You need to define your target market. You need to first understand what problems you’re trying to fix or what needs are unmet and you’re now trying to fulfil with your product or service.
Few tips to define your target market:
- Look at your current customer base (the good customers, anyways) – why do they buy from you? What are their characteristics? Demographics? Problems? Needs?
- Choose specific demographics – age, location, gender, income level, education level, occupation, marital status, ethnic background, etc…
- Consider psychographics of your target – personality, attitudes, values, interests/hobbies, lifestyles.
Targeting a specific market is much more affordable, efficient, and effective way to reach your potential clients and generate more business.
This may sound like a lot of work and you may be thinking you don’t have time for that. But trust me having that information handy will help you attract better clients and grow your business.
2. The Appropriate Media for Attracting Your Target Market
So now you know who you want to attract, the next element of your marketing system is choose an effective media (online marketing, postcard, direct mail marketing, email, via networking events, newspaper, magazines, radio, tv, etc…).
It needs to be a media that allows you to get the attention of your prospects. Additionally, it needs to be affordable because you need to think in terms of a sequence. In other words, if you pick postcards as your preferred media, you want to send out multiple postcards to your target market. “One shot” marketing won’t do it. They need to see your message multiple times before they take action.
3. A Compelling Message
This is a crucial element of your marketing system because this will determine if your prospect would be interested in your product or service. An effective and compelling message will go in line with and address your prospects interests, wants, needs, fears and frustrations.

This goes back to element #1, defining your target market. The better you understand your target market, the better your message will be. This message is what’s going to drive them to want to call you or email you about how to get your product or service.
4. An “Irresistible Offer”
Now that you’ve defined your target market, you’re chosen the right media and you’ve got a compelling message, your next step is to give an offer they can resist. This offer has to be so good they would be insane if they don’t act upon it right away.
You can offer them a promotional discount for a limited time, free consultation, free information or free report. If you’re trying to generate leads, you can offer a free report in exchange of their name, email and phone number. This free report is often called a “lead magnet”. It’s basically a bribe to get your prospects to act without any pressure or thinking they need to buy now.
You irresistible offer needs to have a time limit. This will compel your prospects to take action now. People tend to procrastinate, so don’t give them all the time in the world to act.
5. An Easy Way to Respond & Contact You
Up to this point, you’ve done the hard of getting your prospects’ attention and getting them to act upon your irresistible offer. Now, as part of your marketing system, you need a way for them to respond to your offer.
In most cases, you need to provide a phone number where they can reach you.
Additionally, you need a way to get their information whether it be an online form that they can fill out, a post card they can mail back to you or a link to a pre-recorded voice message. These are some of the ways you can provide your prospects to move forward in your sales process.

You’re already work hard and you’re committed to your small business, why not take the next step and build a marketing system?
